Year 1

Welcome to Autumn 1

We hope you have all had a lovely summer holidays and are ready to learn lots this term! We are very excited to have you back and have lots of exciting things planned for you all.  Your teachers this year are Miss Dodd and Mrs Lyon and your teaching assistant is Mrs Stockton.

English

This term in English, we will be focusing on the book ‘Paper Planes’ by Jim Helmore and Richard Jones. This is a touching story of friendship and flight about two characters who love to make paper aeroplanes.

We will be setting up a simple den in the classroom and inviting the children to write messages to the two main characters on paper planes (that they will be making themselves). Our class will also have the opportunity to write their own stories about two friends who dream of making a truly magnificent vehicle of their own. The children will become active learners, making meaningful connections through strong cross curricular links to Maths, History and Design & Technology, in particular. We are so excited to get started!

Maths

In maths this term, we will use the first few weeks to consolidate our learning from F2. We will then continue to build on our past learning, with number and place value, as we begin to apply our number skills into numbers over 10. Children will use their knowledge of tens frames and part whole models to work out problem solving and reasoning questions. Furthermore, they will consolidate their learning on how to subtract not crossing ten and crossing ten and we will use number lines and numicon as a way of concrete learning.

Phonics & Reading

We will begin to teach children phonics at least once a day, with phonics activities also being available daily through our Continuous Provision. Children will be in ability groups and be exposed to high quality teaching using a range of rich texts to extend their phonic knowledge. Lessons will be fun and engaging including lots of hands on activities, paired work and games.

In reading, we will listen to the children read each morning and change their books every Friday. They will take home a book for pleasure and an appropriate phonics book too. Please ensure your child brings their book bags in every day to allow us to change their books accordingly and read with the children throughout the week. Furthermore, to continue to promote the love of reading, we will have a choice of two stories every day and on entrance to the classroom each morning, children will vote for which story they would like to be read to them at the end of the day.

Please continue to read with your children at home and log on to their Bug Club page 🙂

Theme

This term, our theme question is ‘Is Liverpool bigger than Rockferry?’. Here, there will be a big Geography focus in which we will look at maps, atlases and our own locality.  This ‘local area’ theme will teach our class about their locality beyond the school gate, building on the children’s knowledge and
understanding of their school environment. The children will explore their local area
using first hand observation to enhance their locational awareness along with developing essential map and fieldwork skills. This theme will hopefully give the children a greater awareness and understanding of where we live!
