PSHE & RSE at St Anne’s
PSHE Intent
At St Anne’s Primary School it is our aim that all of the children will eventually leave us with the knowledge, understanding and emotional understanding to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it.
We believe that focusing on nurturing and supporting our children will help them to build resilience, independence and confidence; embrace challenge; foster a love of learning; and increase their level of happiness. We do this through the language we use in class, praising children for their efforts, and using language to encourage children to change their way of thinking. This supports both our school and PSHE aims and values in all aspects of school life.
Our Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum develops children learning in this area and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable our children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
The PSHE curriculum is strengthened with other curriculum schemes such as the Relationships and Sex Education Curriculum and My Happy Mind, enabling our children to learn how to be safe in a range of contexts and to understand, develop and sustain healthy relationships with others.
PSHE Implementation
We use the ‘My Happy Mind’ programme as a core scheme which has five modules for each year group from F1 to Year 6. The modules are linked to building children’s resilience, self-esteem and confidence. The scheme brings together a wealth of experience in education design, leadership, social sciences and child psychology. All of the ideas are built based on a positive psychology and neuroscience and powered by innovative technology to help nurseries, schools and families develop resilience and thriving children. Alongside ‘My Happy Mind’, we actively use the curriculum provided by Ten Ten which combines our PSHE and RSE curriculum together. Alongside this, key dates are planned throughout the year which have a focus on specific topics including – World Mental Health Day, Anti-Bullying Week, E-Safety, Money Sense Week, Keeping Healthy.
PSHE Impact
We hope that by the time the children leave St Anne’s Primary School they will:
be able to approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life
be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society
appreciate difference and diversity
recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty
be able to understand and manage their emotions
be able to look after their mental health and well-being
be able to develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future.
understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level
have respect for themselves and others
have a positive self esteem
RSE Intent
At St Anne’s Primary School, our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) lies within our RE curriculum and is taught by class teachers as direct teaching and is supported by teaching objectives from the Science curriculum. We feel it is an important part of children’s education to help them to understand how they are developing emotionally and physically as well as have a good understanding of healthy relationships with others.
All teaching in the RSE curriculum is appropriate for our children based on their:
Age
Physical and emotional maturity
Religious and cultural backgrounds
Special educational needs and/or disabilities
RSE Implementation
We use the RSE scheme from TEN TEN which ensures the children are given specific information surrounding healthy relationships. There are three key topics which are taught across the whole school during the year –
Created and Loved By God
Created to Love Others
Created to Live in a Community
Children will explore these key themes in practical and engaging lessons and will be encouraged to question, share their understandings and talk about concerns and worries within a safe and supportive environment. Lessons will be led by class teachers and will be taught alongside the PHSE and RE Curriculum.
RSE Impact
Our key priority is to ensure children have the knowledge, understanding and skills to help them make informed and safe judgements about themselves and their relationships with others.
Full details of the content of our RSE curriculum and school policy for RSE can be viewed on our school website.
